Questions To Ask Before You Sign A Lease

By Lizzy Roberts

When is my rent actually due, and what happens if I don't pay it on time? Before you sign a lease, it's important to ask your landlord specific questions relating to the rent, the terms and conditions of the lease, and what expectations he will have while you are a resident. Every landlord has different requirements, so discussing these topics will help avoid potential complications and disputes in the future. Complete transparency is important in maintaining a good relationship with a landlord and ensures that your rental experience hassle-free.

Some other good questions include: What is the penalty for paying my rent late? When am I expected to move out? Are the utilities included in the rent? If not, what is the approximate monthly cost? Can I redecorate or bring my own furniture? Who do I contact if I need repairs or maintenance? What types of pets am I allowed, if any?

A good understanding of the answers to these questions will make your renting experience smoother and will help you develop a better landlord-tenant relationship. Don't assume that the landlord will pay for all damages unless you've previously made an agreement, or that all sizes of pets are allowed ? there are usually restrictions and rules that vary from one landlord to the next. Don't forget to ask these questions, and you can avoid unexpected disagreements.
