What To Do if You're Locked Out: An Interview with Jeffrey Smith of J&J Locksmith

By Jeffrey Smith

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

I have been a locksmith for over 20 years. I am bonded and insured. I work on residential and commercial properties. Some of the services I perform are rekeying, lockouts and lock installation.

What is the number one lock-out situation that you're called to help people with?

The most common situation is someone leaving the house, locking the door behind them and not having his/her keys.

Is there anything that people should not do when they're locked out of their car, home, or office?

Don't panic and break a window or door. It is going to be cheaper to call a locksmith than to repair what was damaged.

Is there anything that they should or can do before calling a locksmith?

Check other entrances and windows for possible ways to get in. If you are locked out during inclement weather find a safe/warm place to wait for help.

When it's an emergency situation, what can people do to make sure they're contacting a trustworthy and reliable locksmith?

Ask if the locksmith is bonded and insured.

After having the lock opened, do you have any advice for what to do if the person lost their key?

Because the key is lost, you don't know who may have it. The lock should be rekeyed or replaced. In most cases rekeying the lock will be less expensive.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?
