Victorious MMA of Troy Trains Fighters of All Ages and Experience Levels

By Kelly Church

Training everyone from beginners to competitive fighters, Victorious MMA was founded in 2010 to offer the Warren, MI community a versatile fighting gym. The studio doesn't just focus on the athletic element of fighting, but also places emphasis on "the reality of violence and the application of the discipline in the context of the street." Victor Torres is the owner and a trainer at Victorious MMA, says fighters of all ages and experience levels are welcome.

"Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very distinct because unlike other martial arts, you can start training at any age and practice it up to any age," Torres says. "Additionally, [those] skills are useful both in the gym and on the street. There is no striking, and the focus is on gaining leverage on your opponent, no matter what size he [or] she might be."

Muay Thai kickboxing, however, is often called The Science of Eight Limbs because it utilizes fists, elbows, knees and shins in contrast to traditional boxing using just two fists. Muay Thai training improves stamina, hand-eye coordination, speed, agility and strength, according to Torres.

Victorious MMA holds Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai kickboxing and cardio kickboxing classes. They also have strength and conditioning classes, and kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. There are classes specifically for team training, however, Torres wants to make sure people know that anyone can take classes. There are students of all experience levels and ages.

"Don't be afraid to start training," Torres says. "It's never too late to begin learning something new and taking steps to improve your physical and mental health. Aside from the obvious boost in confidence and self-esteem, there is the added benefit of friendship and camaraderie from your training partners. It's no exaggeration when I say that this is a home away from home and like a second family for many of our members."

Victorious MMA is also a partner of the We Defy Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps disabled veterans by providing scholarships so they can practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The organization hopes to help former combat veterans overcome their now challenges from disabling injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Classes at Victorious MMA are offered five days a week, and some days as even early as 6 a.m. and as late as 7p.m.
