What's one of the biggest mistakes that people can make when it comes to pruning their trees and shrubs?

The biggest mistakes we've seen our customers run into when trimming trees and shrubs are 1. Having dull blades. Dull blades can leave burn marks, and does not provide a clean cut, which can ultimately lead to disease. 2. Additionally lacking knowledge of the tree/shrub can result in inexperience when trimming, leaving some trees and shrubs to be trimmed too much or too little. Trimming too much can result in damage to the shrub, sometimes resulting in a lack of growth or flowering for years to come. Trimming too little results in oddly shaped shrubs and trees, that are not natural looking or aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Can you briefly describe what pruning is and why it's important?

Trimming is the removal of branches and twigs from trees and shrubs. It is important to trim trees and shrubs for the same reasons as mentioned above; maintaining health, promote the growth and quality of flowers and fruits on certain species, and also control and limit growth in certain species.

When should pruning usually be done in most yards?

Trimming should almost always be done in the spring or fall, and for some species both seasons.

What tools do you need to prune a tree/shrub, and what are the basic steps in the process?

Tools we use to trim trees and shrubs include gas or electric hedge trimmers, loppers or hand trimmers, pruning saws, gloves, and protective eye wear. There's a large range of steps for trimming shrubs and trees, mostly depending on the species, but the most basic steps in trimming all species are first and foremost removal of all dead and structurally weak branches and limbs, and make sure to follow the natural outline of the shrub or tree.
