By Jade Rubino

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Riemer Floors was founded in 1946 by Harry Riemer. Sixty nine years later, we are still a family-owned and operated company located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. We offer floor covering products and services of all types in the residential, commercial, and builder divisions. Because of our long-standing relationships with our vendors, we are able to offer a vast selection of quality products and services at competitive pricing. Additionally, we are Michigan's largest Karastan and STAINMASTER® Showroom as well as Michigan's only Armstrong Elite Showroom. These titles allow us to offer exclusive extended warranties to our customers. Whether you are in the market for carpet, hardwood, rugs, ceramic, vinyl, or more we are a one-stop shop for all of your flooring needs.

What are the main decisions that people need to make when it comes to choosing new hardwood flooring?

Before you choose what type of hardwood flooring you would like, it is important to first determine if you are a suitable candidate by taking into consideration the characteristics of the room you would like to install hardwood into as well as your lifestyle. Once you have determined if you are a suitable candidate by consulting a knowledgeable company, then you will have some decisions to make including species, color, board size, finish, brand, and engineered or solid. Even though these decisions can initially seem overwhelming, they are all crucial to the end result. The process can be simplified by speaking with an expert. They will know what questions to ask you in order to narrow down your options and point you in the right direction. Many of our customers walk into our showroom and while initially overwhelmed by options, quickly are able to focus in on a few products that would be best-suited for them. After taking a few samples home and placing within the destined space, they are able to make a decision in which they are confident.

What are some of the most popular hardwood flooring options for homeowners?

The options for today's hardwood floors are endless and expand way beyond your "traditional" hardwood floor. Within the past few years, we have been seeing a shift in homeowners' purchasing options as they search for a floor that matches their personalities. We still carry your traditional hardwood floor and always will but due to popular demand we have expanded our selection to include a wide variety of hand-scraped, vintage, and darker woods. Additionally, we are seeing a lot of gray toned woods and wider, longer planks. Reclaimed or recycled woods are also quite popular because they are both eco-friendly and have a unique look.

Can you explain how to properly maintain hardwood floors so they last longer and still look good?

Hardwood floors are timeless and made to last with proper maintenance. One of the most important factors is to control the humidity within your home. Humidity levels should be between 30%-50% at all times. This means during the dry, cold months use a humidifier (preferably attached to your furnace) and in the warmer, wetter months use a de-humidier. Additionally, it is important to protect your floors. Use mats and rugs in high-traffic areas, avoid water on your floor at all costs, keep Fido's nails trimmed and leave your stilettos at the door! Sweep regularly and be sure to use a floor cleaning product that is recommended by the manufacturer. When you purchase your floor, be sure to read the manufacturer's guide to caring and cleaning because oftentimes your warranties can be voided if you do not follow these guidelines. When in doubt, ask the company where you purchased the flooring!

What advice do you have for someone who wants to install hardwood floors but has a limited budget?

Just as there is a wide range of flooring types, there are is also a wide range of factors that will affect the cost of your hardwood products. It is crucial to take into account your lifestyle and purchase a hardwood that meets your needs. Quality does matter! Nine times out of ten, purchasing a poorly-made product and skimping on quality will lead to disaster. Arm yourself with the knowledge necessary and take the time to learn about the product you are purchasing and who will be installing it. That being said, there are many hardwood products that will withstand the test of time and also fit into a limited budget. You can also take advantage of financing options, which also might allow you to expand your budget a bit. If you just can't find a hardwood that meets your budget, look into popular hardwood alternatives including laminate and luxury vinyl tile that mimic the hardwood look.
