The Importance of Proper Landscape Maintenance: An Interview with Dan Monsma of Monsma Landscape & Maintenance

By Dan Monsma

Please describe the background of your company and your qualifications.

In the late 1970's my brother and I both had our own individual lawn customers. We found that when we worked together, we each had more free time. We also started doing some shoveling and by the time we were 16, had our own truck with a plow and have been purchasing equipment together ever since. Lawn care expanded to landscaping in the 1990's.

Experience has been the best teacher. We attend many industry seminars to keep us current and excellent vendors keep us informed of the latest products. We are members of the following professional organizations:
MNLA (Michigan Nursery & Landscape Association)
CGIP (Certified Green Industry Professionals Landscape Contractor)
MDA (Michigan Dept. of Agriculture) Team members certified by the MDA
Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce
Small Business Association of Michigan

What are some of the services your company provides?

We currently have maintenance, fertilizer/weed control, pruning and weeding, mowing, landscape design and installation crews and employ sixteen.

In your opinion, why is it important to routinely maintain your lawn?

For me that question is like asking, "Why do you brush your teeth?" We do it to take care of what we have. Well maintained lawns and landscapes add value and curb appeal to your property.

What benefit does hydroseeding provide for my lawn?

If given a choice between sod and hydroseeding, I recommend hydroseeding since you get a blend of seed that is better suited for Michigan soils and conditions and after three years hydroseeded lawns in most cases look better than sodded lawns.

Are there any ways to limit the growth of weeds on my lawn?

The best defense against weeds is a strong, healthy turf. The easiest way to have this is with proper amounts of water and nutrients.

What maintenance can I do to my lawn to improve my curb appeal?

Good Maintenance will improve curb appeal, however every landscape has a life span. Approximately every 15-20 years some areas of your landscape may need a makeover.
