The Facts About Converting Your Shower Into a Bathtub: An Interview with Angela McVey of MHI Interiors

By Angela McVey

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

MHI Interiors is a full service remodeling company for your bath, kitchen, basement, attic or any other room in your home. We offer clients a complete package that includes design services, help picking finishes and all construction needs.

Can you briefly explain some of the top reasons why people want to convert their shower into a bathtub?

One reason a homeowner may want to convert their shower into a bathtub is they may have smaller children.

What about the opposite, converting a bathtub into a shower?

When MHI Interiors converts a bathtub into a shower, it is usually in a master bath. Most homeowners today like the "spa" type bathroom that includes a large shower with wall jets.

What are the main steps of the converting/remodel process?

Main steps for the remodeling process are:
1. Meeting with client and discuss in detail their wants and needs.
2. Discuss a budget they feel comfortable with and determine if all wants can be met within their budget.
3. Once budget is determined, have a contract with detail of the process of the construction project listed. Have finishes approved.
4. During construction process- have project time line, status updates for client.
5. Follow-up after construction with client.

What is the basic range of options a homeowner has for their new shower or tub?

The options are determined by the budget. Most homeowners want to add tile to either their shower or tub area.

Do you have any tips for someone who wants a bathroom with a new look and feel after the shower/tub remodel?

When we remodel a bathroom, I like to guide the homeowner to what is current but not too trendy easy to maintain and fits with their home era and decor. Large tile is a good option because it has a modern look and less grout lines to clean, quartz counters are non-porous for easy clean-up and has many different colors and styles to choose. I always like chrome for fixture finishes. Chrome has been around forever and while other finishes may be the "it" color for now, Chrome really never goes out of style.
