Sweet Potato Heaven Lies in Redford With Decadent Pies and Homemade Specialties

By Elisha Neubauer

Sweet Potato lovers across Michigan rejoice! Your Heaven on Earth has arrived.

In 1987, a surprising twist of fate led to the incorporation of Sweet Potato Sensations. Cassandra Thomas was not a fan of candied yams, and during a holiday season, was trying her very best to avoid creating the dish for her husband, Jeffery. To quite his request for the food, Thomas decided to play with sweet potatoes, another of her husband's favorites.

After several trials and tribulations, Thomas settled on what seemed to be the perfect sweet potato cookie recipe. The sweet and savory snack hushed her husband's requests for candied yam. So much, in fact, that the couple decided to set up a table at the 30-Block Garage Sale held in Rosedale Park in Detroit. In less than three hours, the pair sold out of the 125 bags of cookies they had prepared.

Immediately realizing they had a gem on their hands, the couple incorporated in December of that year, officially launching the business in 1988. While they began as a small home kitchen operation, they are now a full blown Bakery Café with their very own retail location.

"We are unique to the business eco system because we have tapped into the Sweet Potato Niche," explains Espy Thomas, Co-Owner. "Everything we make is out of fresh sweet potatoes we wash, steam, and peel by hand every day."

The shop, which has now been featured on major news channels, magazine avenues, and more, is sticking with the small business model, despite its popularity and growth. "We have amazing customer service," Thomas declares. "We are family owned and operated so that gives our space the grandma's kitchen feel." But, Thomas cites another reason for their popularity. "We are also scratch bakers," she states. "So everything is made by hand and from our family recipes."

Although the company has grown in leaps and bounds since first opening its doors in 1988, they have no plans to stop any time soon. The Thomas family knows they need to keep moving along to keep their momentum, and already have long and short term goals waiting in the wings to be enacted.

"Some of our short-term goals would be completing our kitchen renovations to offer our savory food items everyday that we are open," states Thomas. "This includes our Chicken & Sweet Potato Waffles, Sweet Potato Pancakes, Turkey Chops, Salmon Croquettes, Turkey Sausage and more." When it comes to long-term goals, the family is striving to set up a second location. "We want to expand our product line and bakery offerings," Thomas details. "And we want to be able to offer our products to customers on a larger scale."
