Passport Pizza Delivers The Goods One Slice At A Time

By Keith Donaldson

With 19 locations throughout the suburbs of Detroit, Passport Pizza has built itself into a mainstay in the area thanks to its quality, tasty pizzas. Owners Mike & Sue Latour run the business with their family and answered some of our questions about what makes Passport so successful.

How would you describe your menu?

We are best known for our Detroit style deep dish pizza, known for its caramelized cheese crust. On top of that, we have a large variety of styles ranging from a thin hand tossed pizza to a deep dish Chicago-style, with over 30 toppings to choose from. Our menu doesn't stop, it also includes grinders with fresh baked bread and salads are made fresh to order.

What separates your business from competitors?

We have a full menu that does more than just pizzas, we also deliver our fall-off-the-bone ribs, fresh salads, toasted sandwiches, wings, and desserts. We are open for lunch and late nights. We are a community staple trying constantly to supply local food pantries with the products our community needs. We have won the National Neighborhood Award granted by the National Restaurant Association for making the greatest contribution to our community. We also worked with the Michigan restaurant association to pass a law in the State of Michigan, which helps reduce our food waste in our landfills and we are able to use the good food to feed the 22 percent of Michiganders that may not know where their next meal is coming from.

What else would you like to convey to the public about your business? What do you enjoy about your job?

Passport pizza is more than just another pizzeria chain, it's a family business that cares about making quality food and serving our community. We were also one of the first pizzerias to implement the Detroit-style pizzas over 30 years ago.

There's two things that makes it worth showing up every morning. First, is the smile on our customers face when they get their pizza. There is nothing better than seeing a small child pick up a "Big Ben"(our 24" pizza). Secondly, Our pizza makes a difference. With over 500 pallets a year to local food pantries and it actually changes the community around us. Serving our customers and community makes it worth it for us.
