Nationally-Accredited Massage School Maintains The Spirit of a Family Business

By Kelly Church

Irene's Myomassology Institute is a nationally-accredited Southfield, MI massage school that trains massage students on proper therapeutic techniques. The family-owned business was opened by Irene Gauthier in the 1970s after she had been formally trained and practicing massage for two decades. Gauthier was raised in a holistic health environment and made that the focus of her life by teaching others the same.

Starting her school program out of her basement, Gauthier taught to a small group of just four people. She opened her first state-licensed school in 1987, at the age of 67, with a program developed from those first few years of classes, evolving as she learned through teaching students.

"At the age of 90, she was still coming to work five days a week to see clients and work with students in her school clinic," Kathy Skubik, Executive Director, and Gauthier's daughter, said. "Although her presence is very much missed, her spirit lives on at our school."

Skubik grew up with her mother's teachings and now runs the program, carrying on Irene's legacy. Skubik said she is dedicated to enhancing the school, giving students the best educational experience possible by earning national accreditation in 2001.

Students at Irene's Myomassology Institute take their state licensing exam while still in school, and the institute helps them complete their application for their license. To take pressure off the students, the school submits both the exam and license applications and fees on behalf of the students. Skubik said the school maintains a spirit of a family-owned business, is committed to a high-quality experience while preparing students for a successful career.

"Sharing health, love, compassion, respect for the Earth and all its inhabitants, and an unrelenting quest to learn and grow is Irene's legacy and I continue to carry it forward with pride," Skubik said.
