Getting to Know Your Moving Company: An Interview with U-Save Moving and Storage

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

U-Save Moving and Storage is a local and long distance moving company specializing in residential moves in the Mid-Michigan area. We offer full service moving to just moving labor services for those that just want someone to help load/unload their moving truck or trailer.

How did you get into this line of work?

After being fired I needed a job. I found work with a local moving company whom I worked for for a couple of months. The guy was a rogue mover and wouldn't pay me, but I learned how he was doing his company and using my years of experience in marketing and sales I started this company back in 2008. FYI that rogue mover stills me over $300 in pay.

You mention a good amount on your website about pricing and remaining affordable. What determines the cost for your services?

Our rates are fairly standard. One thing that I do that many of the other licensed and insured movers don't is keep my rates really simple and easy to understand. Most of the movers, especially the ones that belong to the MMA, have hard and complex moving rates. We have a simple hourly rate and affordable flat rates for the long distance moves.

What is the difference between your Moving Labor services and your regular moving services?

Our moving labor is simply a service where we provide just labor. Just the man power that someone may need to either load or unload their own rented moving van or trailer such as U-Haul, Penske, ABF, PODS, and so forth. Our full service moving is a service where we provide everything. Moving truck, labor, blankets and dollies, tools and so on.

Do you believe that moving services are truly necessary for the average homeowner?

In most cases hiring a professional mover like U-Save Moving and Storage saves the homeowner a lot of headache and stress while still being affordable. In some cases we have done a full service move for close to the same price had the homeowner done themselves. Most homeowners don't want or need the extra stress of doing a move for themselves and that is where we come in. Many times I will get a homeowner calling me and say that want movers this time because they did it themselves last time and it was a pain in the butt.

What sets your moving services apart from competition in your area?

Our service really. We go out of our way in customer service. Unfortunately many moving companies think that the customer works for them instead of the moving company working for the customer. I try to get my people to chat casually with our customers and answer as many questions about the move as they can. We contact people quickly when they want a moving quote or to ask questions. On the website I lay everything out for the customer. There are many articles for the customer to read so as to make an informed decision about their moving company. We also posted a "Meet the Crew" page so that our customers can see the movers that may get on their move and learn a little about that mover. No other moving company anywhere has done that. I also have a page full of video moving reviews. Many moving companies only have written testimonials that can be easily faked, ours are all on video and they are all verifiable.

How early should a homeowner contacting a moving services company before the day of their move?

The sooner the better, especially in the summer months of May-Aug. But if they could give at least six weeks that is best. I can usually accommodate someone if they call a minimum of 3 days. It really depends on the time of year. The summer is always the busiest.

What specific qualities should a customer look for in a qualified and reliable moving company?

How does the company present themselves is the first rule. If a company has a professional ad and website. Do they take the time to spell correctly. How open and honest are they in their approach. I can't tell you how many times that a homeowner gets scammed because they hired a moving company off Craigslist that didn't have a website. A company without a website is the biggest key that they are a scam.

What are some common mistakes that homeowners make when hiring certain moving companies?

The biggest mistake that homeowners make is that they hire the cheapest movers. Especially in the moving business you get what you pay for. If you are moving to another state and 4 out 5 movers are saying $1000 but one mover is saying $300 you better believe that the mover at $300 is a scam. Yet many people will hire that guy because he was the cheapest.

What is the best way for people to get in contact with you?

The easiest way for me is the phone. Call us at 517-580-4247 or you can go to Facebook or email us.
