Everything You Need to Know About Moving: An Interview with EZ Moving and Storage

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Since 1994, our professional moving company in Michigan has been providing local, long distance, and international moving and storage services with exceptional professionalism. We also provide hands on experience in professional packing services and also offer a complete array of all packing supplies to professionally pack yourself if you so choose. How did you get into this line of work?

In 1992, I was a mover for Pioneer Moving & Storage and started out as an ordinary helper. Within the first 90 days I excelled to being one of the better movers in the business and so much so that I attracted another owner of a moving company called Better Way Moving. The owner was friends with the owner of Pioneer Moving. He had heard of my special talents to succeed. He took me aside one day and asked me if I would like to improve my pay and position. I welcomed the chance to prove myself and took him up on his offer. Soon I was a driver for Better Way. Not to long after I started to see that the moving companies lacked the professionalism that should be there as a whole and I didn't like the way they both operated. I soon started to think about how I would start a moving company. So I drafted up plans to start my own business. I took these plans to my father Greg Thompson Sr and asked him if he approved with my plans to launch my business. After about 15 minutes of studying my plan, he looked up at me and I gasped?.He said" I'd go for it!". I was elated. Greg Thompson Sr has a serious business background having worked for companies like Jiffy Lube, and Tasty Freeze, and Mr. Bulky Bulk Foods. So I trusted his decision. So I proceeded with launching my own moving company in November 1993. It was called Visionary Moving. After about a year after I hungered for building another moving company. This one was called Just Moving. Not soon after did I find myself overwhelmed with operating 2 moving companies. They were each successful and doubling income year over year was the norm. My father heard that I was running way over my head operationally, that one day he had asked me if I needed a partner. What better thing in the world than an opportunity to work along side my dad. So I took him up on the offer provided he brought something to the table. He said, " what if I bought a moving company and we ran 3 moving companies?". I said that sounded like a great idea. So he did so buying a company out of Detroit Michigan, named EZ Moving. We then formed a corporation named Thompson Development Corporation and operated 3 moving companies. Not long after, about 5 years later in 2001, we were approached by a worldwide Van Line named Paul Arpin Van Lines. We then joined this Van Line to then up our game by providing local moving services, but now long distance and worldwide moving services. At this time we then had to make a decision of what 3 moving companies were going to operate along side Paul Arpin Van Lines. After a day of deciding, we chose EZ Moving and decided to merge Visionary Moving and Just Moving operations into 1 company and form EZ Moving & Storage in 2002. From this point on we have operated as EZ Moving & Storage and we are stronger and better than ever providing over 20,000 sq ft of climate controlled storage and offer a full array of moving and storage services covering all sectors of needs in the relocation industry. We have maintained an A+ Rating with the Better Business Bureau and have done so since our inception.

Are there any specific responsibilities you ask of your clients prior to the move-in and on the actual move date?

On local moves, we also inform our customers that we charge by the hour. Most legit moving companies charge this way. So time if of the essence. If a customer is working on a budget, remember that preparation and planning go a long way in saving money in the end of the relocation process. Having things packed up and prepared, bed disassembled, and having boxes all stored in the garage and save valuable time and effort.

What is your specific position at EZ Moving and Storage?

I am Chief of Operations. I handle all the day to day function of the company and make sure that EZ Moving & Storage operates and functions with the best efforts made by each and every employee. We work as a team and that can achieve anything.

Do you believe that moving services are truly necessary for the average homeowner?

In this day and age we live with the elevated expectations that we deserve better than our ancestors did before us. With this in mind, most things in our daily lives are expected to be automatic and completed with ease. When it comes to moving you have the choice of renting a truck and gathering up family members to help assist moving whereas this process can exceed 2 to 4 days for the whole process or you can choose a professional mover like that of EZ Moving & Storage and get your move done in a matter of hours instead of days. Doing the move yourself requires the homeowner to search for a local moving truck rental store. After having found a location, the individual needs to have a driver drive to wherever that location may be located and take the time and process of having to wait in line to sign out a moving truck, rent pads, rent equipment, buy a lock, and then drive to the old home and spend a day or two having endured doing all the labor themselves and spending $80.00 a day for a rental truck, $40.00 a day for the pads and dollies, $10.00 for the lock, $30.00 for insurance, and more importantly buy the gas at $3.50 - $4.00 a gallon (using a truck that only gets 10 mile per gallon) you will have to buy because when you return the truck the gas tank must be returned full. All elements of renting a truck can total well over $450.00 and you did all the work yourself! Also when doing it yourself, counting on family members to assist you moving can be an enduring task in itself by having to count on everyone showing up, having to feed everyone and not to mention owing favors in the coming years to come. Also when a client decides to move out of state, the truck rental companies make their exceptional money by charging higher rates for one way trips. One way meaning that you rent a truck in one state where you live now, and when moving to your new home in another state, you simply drop off the truck at the nearest truck rental dealer. By doing this, these truck rental companies charge a higher premium to use this convenience. During my years of study in this field, I found out that it is much cheaper to drive the rental truck out of state to the new home, unload all of the items loaded in the new home, and drive the truck back to state and location from where I rented from. Having this done can save you as much as 40% less than doing a one way if you find doing it yourself is a better option.

Now using a professional moving company like EZ Moving & Storage can save you all the hassle of going through his process and we cost about the same and in some cases, less than the traditional renting of a truck and doing it all yourself. We provide experts in the field that are trained to do what would take the average family a week to complete, we get done in a matter of hours. If moving out of state, we can get done what would take a normal person to move; a week long process, we get done in a matter of days. We are one of the few movers out there that can load you one day, and have you in your new home the very next day. This of course depends upon the sate and distance traversed to get the items delivered. But in most cases, we make what would take a week get done in a day or two. Moving companies as a whole are a luxury but using us can save you a lot of time and hassle in the end.

We conduct studies on our competition each and every week to ensure that our costs are within industry standards for the options we offer.

Is there anything you believe you do better/different?

We excel at customer service. It begins when the first call is made or online submission. We are very thorough and get to the details that matter so that there are no surprises when it comes to the operation and execution of the relocation. We also excel at training our movers to provide that extra touch when moving their items with care so when they arrive, they lay down the added protection to the home and achieve the optimum performance in loading and or unloading from or to the homes. Such things as we shrink-wrap or plastic wrap if you will all cloth based items before we move them. Items like sofas, chairs are especially cared for. We offer and can provide mattress bedding protection as well by placing mattresses in large plastic bags. Another way we excel over our competition is if there is problem, we have a customer service center available by phone or online by using our website that offers a gateway for any problems that develop along the way. When problems do develop, we study these areas of concern with staff internally and also with our drivers and helpers to find out the root of the problem and how best not repeat again for future customers. Our customers and their experience is paramount when using EZ Moving & Storage.

Can you give us an example of a strange or a tough situation you have had to deal with while moving a customer in the past couple years?

We had one situation where a customer had to have all of his belongings from a second story location of a home and the items had to come out a window and out over a roof and had to be slid down a special ramp we provided to bring things out of a home. One of the items was a 500 lb armoire! His stairway in the home was only a small steel spiral stairway. So the option of moving items down this route was next to impossible. So the only option was the window and roof. It took more than 6 men to make this happen safely.

How early should a homeowner contacting a moving services company before the day of their move?

A customer should start thinking about getting an estimate 30 days prior to the planned moving date. As far as reserving a moving date, we ask that a customer provide at least 10 to 12 days in advance of the planned moving date to secure and guarantee the moving date they need. If the customer is flexible, they can provide us with as little 3 to 5 days notice. We will fit them within our route system and get them a reasonable time and date to complete their relocation.

What specific qualities should a customer look for in a qualified and reliable moving company?

State licensed and fully insured. Asking a mover to produce certificates for these as well as accreditations should never be a problem. Researching the company online will produce a plethora of information on any given company you are deciding to use. What are some common mistakes that homeowners make when hiring certain moving companies?

Most customers fall victim to scandalous and rouge movers that prey on customers who don't know any better. By not researching and going with a licensed mover, they place themselves at great peril when moving. Such as getting charged nearly double than what they initially quoted. Also, did you know? That if a mover is not licensed chances are they are not insured as well!? By not being insured, if one of the movers gets hurt on the customers premises while performing a move, the mover himself can come and sue the customer directly and personally for any disability and / or loss of work?! This is true. A state licensed mover such as EZ Moving & Storage has to provide and verify proof to the State that the company carries workmen's compensation insurance and liability and more importantly cargo insurance. Most people who are moving don't do the research on the company and find out after their bad experience that many other customers who have had horrible experience later find out that a particular mover has had many damage testimonies, or other troubles such as stolen or missing items from their move.
