Interior Design and Bringing Out Your Personal Style: An Interview with Sarah Marsh of It Was Me Interiors

By Sarah Marsh

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

It Was Me Interiors is a full service interior design company that provides commercial and residential interior design to clients all over the USA. It Was Me Interiors allows you the benefit of working with a trained professional who does all the work but allows you all the credit. With knowledge in codes, electrical, plumbing, space planning, ergonomics and finish materials, your project can go full phase with our company. From brand new construction homes to décor, we do it all.

What are some important things for people to consider before they start a home design or remodeling project?

Our famous question is, "If you could have everything you want and not worry about money, what would it be?" We ask this because we find clients often hold back what they really desire in fear of the price tag. We are the professionals and it is our job to find solutions to your desires. We also want clients to check us out just as much as we do them. A successful design will only happen when there is trust between both parties. We want to be a fit to work together.

Can you briefly explain how you help clients discover their own personal style?

We offer free consultations to get to know and observe our clients. It is important to us to see how they live. Do they have physical limitations or aches? Are there a lot of items that have no place and are scattered around? Is the entire family of 7 in the kitchen at the same time? Have they started projects but never finished? Etc. By asking questions we often discover challenges the client didn't even realize they had. We are professionals and our job is to make beautiful and functional spaces that are designed specifically for the client.

When people have a good idea of their own style, how can they use that to guide their design choices?

With the use of online technology and home décor shows, start collection pictures. After gathering a dozen pictures assess what it is in each picture that you are drawn to. We find often that a client may have 10 pictures but the only common factor in all of them is 1 element such as a dark walnut floor. Use that element as the base of building your own design.

What is one of the biggest challenges that homeowners face when it comes to interior design and how do you help them solve this?

Client rarely even know where to begin and cannot see how the final outcome will look. Hiring a designer is paying for peace of mind. A good designer will listen and lead you down the right road that fits your needs and wants. Remember, a designer would NEVER suggest something they think you shouldn't do. So if they give you options, they endorse any selection you pick. We have the full vision and even though you may be making one decision at a time, the designer knows where they are leading you to achieve the design you wanted.

What advice do you have to help someone who knows what they like when they see it but doesn't feel like they can recreate it in their own home?

If you feel you know what you want but are unsure of where to start, call a designer for a hourly advice session. They can give you resources and tips to create the space you want. Design doesn't always have to be complicated. If you get stuck, that designer will be more than happy to come in and execute the plan.
