Heavenly Metal Brings Ann Arbor an Everchanging Array of Handcrafted Jewelry, Apparel, and Much More

By Elisha Neubauer

When Vicki Honeyman first opened her hair salon, Vicki's Wash & Wear Cuts, she had no idea what she would be starting- especially considering the future of the building would have nothing to do with the salon industry!

Honeyman moved to Ann Arbor just over thirty years ago, opening her salon and settling in nicely. After volunteering for an arts organization, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, for many years, she became Director for the group, leading her to move the Festival's office into a back space in her shop. Fifteen years after taking on the position, she retired, leaving her back space empty. It was then that a turning point in Honeyman's life occurred.

"I soon started buying wholesale recycled-metal artworks and locally made jewelry to fill up the empty space, thus the name Heavenly Metal," explains Honeyman. "The store grew and evolved into what is now a lifestyle store of mostly handcrafted jewelry, purses, art, ceramics, footwear, and clothing that is made around the U.S."

While the lifestyle store grew and expanded, Honeyman continued to push her hair cutting salon, utilizing the new side of the business to enhance the services she offered. "My haircutting business is unique to the area because I don't do chemical services (color or perms), use a hair dryer, or wash client's hair," she tells us. "That's why it's called Vicki's Wash & Wear Haircuts. By cutting the hair dry (I mist the hair with a water spray bottle) I can see what the hair is doing and falling into shape as I work." She refers to it as a common sense and intuitive approach to haircutting.

When it comes to stock, the product you'll find in Heavenly Metal is all handpicked and selected by Honeyman herself. She finds the pieces she sells at various trade and apparel show, such as the New York Gift Show. Every day there are new and exciting items arriving in-store, making every day a new experience for even the most dedicated of customers. "I enjoy this model of filling my store with new goods from new artists, as well as having the opportunity to change the displays to accommodate inventory," states Honeyman.

"Our wish for you is to embrace the notion 'you are as beautiful as you feel,'" Honeyman affirms. "Wear it. Live it." For those not able to make it to the shop daily or weekly to check out the latest items, don't fret, there's another avenue. According to Honeyman, approximately 90% of all items in-store are listed on the website, making it easy to shop Heavenly Metals without even getting dressed. "If there's something you see on the store blog that's not included in the online shop, give a call or shoot us an email, we're happy to ship to you," she announces. Shipping is free on every item, regardless of size or style, and as Honeyman says, "Our packages are always wrapped to bring a smile when opened."
