Get Up And Go At Move Fitness And Wellness

By Keith Donaldson

Getting fit is important. For the folks of Ann Arbor, MOVE Fitness and Wellness is there. MOVE has become the top mind-body fitness and wellness center in the city. Utilizing Gyrotonic exercises as well as Pilates, MOVE is the place to go to get fit and recharge. Elaine Economou, President & CEO of MOVE Fitness and Wellness, answered some of our questions about her studio.

How would you describe GYROTONIC exercises?

The GYROTONIC® Expansion System consists of a series of circular and fluid movements that work the entire body through muscular, skeletal, and cardiovascular stimulation. The movement system is taught in private or small group sessions on unique weight and pulley-based equipment, and it incorporates elements of yoga, dance, tai chi, and swimming. The benefits of regular practice include decompression of the joints, stimulation of the whole body, and balanced and healthy spinal motion. GYROKINESIS® classes are done typically in a group format starting seated on stools and then on a mat. Sometimes described as a fluid yoga, the system teaches strength, ease and balance in the body and joints. At MOVE Wellness, our clients range in age and fitness levels, with clients well into their 80s enjoying the benefits as well as young elite athletes.

What advice would you give to someone who is new to Pilates?

Don't be intimidated. Pilates is based on the science of human movement and is suitable for all bodies at every stage of life. It is a modifiable system of more than 500 exercises. MOVE works with a range of clients including elite athletes, the active ageing population, post-therapy clients, and those interested in building a life-long conditioning program that is efficient, effective and safe. Our trainers love to help people learn the basics in a safe and challenging workout. Consistency is key because progress takes time. Be patient, as it takes a few sessions to understand the principles in your own body. Joseph Pilates, the founder of the Pilates method, once said, "In 10 sessions, you feel better, 20 sessions you look better, 30 sessions you have a completely new body." Know that by understanding and sensing your own body by doing Pilates, you are building strength and mind-body awareness which can have a profound effect on physical strength, overall health and happiness.

What else would you like to convey to the public about your wellness center? What do you enjoy about your job?

At MOVE Wellness, we want to help clients live a joyful life in a fit and healthy body in a warm, supportive atmosphere. We want people to move their bodies with ease and do what they love in life whether it is run, walk, or playing with kids or grandkids. Evidence is mounting that movement is one of the keys to longevity and we know that is true from our nearly 20 years in this industry with the countless success stories we have helping people mitigate pain, stiffness, injuries and feel their best. Our vision is to live in a culture where fitness and wellness are defined by moving the body in ways that bring people joy and health, promoting behaviors that support a personal passion and mission in the world.
