Get Inspired to Dance at City Style Tango

By Marina Jokic

City Style Tango in Troy, Michigan teaches Latin and smooth style dancing through private and group lessons as well as practice parties. Students have access to the latest dance trends and a great selection of programs, all in a rich cultural setting. James Valentino, owner and instructor at City Style, has been dancing since 1998 and is known for his exceptional mastery of the Argentine tango.

Learning to dance can be quite intimidating for some people. With its experienced teaching team and first-rate facilities, City Style Tango has designed a fun and supportive learning experience for beginners to advanced dancers alike, taking the anxiety out of learning to dance altogether. Teachers are trained in multiple styles including Tango, West Coast Swing, Salsa, Bachata, Zouk, Ballroom, Flamenco, and International. Valentino, in particular, specializes in teaching American Smooth and Rhythm dancing, and has competed in and won various celebrity dance benefits.

"Our diverse cultural environment facilitates a fun and exciting channel for students to expand their dance experience in a friendly setting with people of like interests," says Valentino. For those trying Latin dancing for the first time, there is nothing more rewarding than learning and mastering your first few steps or techniques. The feeling of accomplishment only grows as a student moves from the fledgling firs steps to a more confident and rhythmic gait. Certain Latin dances can be especially challenging, calling not only for precision and cadence, but also for exceptional synchronicity between partners.

The Argentine tango is often considered the most difficult partner dance to pick up, for instance. Valentino cleverly sums up the essence of the tango: "Tango is not a dance that you can feel, tango is a feeling that can be danced." Indeed, the tango is the ultimate test of intuition and astute communication between partners. The "master key to all partner dancing," as Valentino dubs it, the tango certainly takes you for a steep learning curve. Beginners should not be discouraged when attempting to learn it, Valentino emphasizes, and should stick to their regular lessons. Students should be receptive and relaxed as they embark on their dancing journey.

The studio's large dance floor accommodates talent showcases and community event productions in addition to holding regular teaching sessions. In other words, you can plan your next dancing event, big or small, at City Style. Wedding choreography is another popular pastime at the studio whereby instructors teach eager brides- and grooms-to-be the basics of ballroom dancing and other popular techniques.

Interestingly, the name City Style Tango was coined as a result of Valentino's hometown, Detroit. Natives of Detroit are known for their unique ballroom style or city style as it is popularly called. Having a distinctively smooth quality to their dancing, Detroit dancers stand out from the rest. Valentino's studio is an homage to his hometown and its original dance style.
