Get Help Decorating Your Home: An Interview with Lisa Wilk of Affordable Interiors

By Lisa Wilk

Tell us a little bit about your experience, company history and the services you offer.

Affordable Interiors has been around for twenty years. We have worked with many clients over that time frame, including both residential and commercial projects. We offer an array of services to help our clients from any point in the design process, whether it is selecting paint colors, coordinating materials, creating floor plans or overseeing a renovation from start to finish. As designers, we feel no detail should be overlooked and that is why we are available to our clients no matter how large or small the project may be.

What is a common misconception that people have about interior design?

A common misconception that people have is actually with the design process itself. Many consumers often want to jump to one specific area but don't realize that to create a complete room, many elements are involved. For example, we find homeowners always want to start with paint color and design a room from there. However, we believe it is best to make your other selections such as fabric, furniture, lighting, etc. prior to finalizing a paint color. There are thousands of colors to choose from but your other options are more limited. There isn't any reason to stress in finding fabrics and furniture to coordinate with your wall color when you can take the time to truly select the sofa and window treatments you want and determine the paint color later.

How should someone who wants professional help decorating their house start the process?

A great way to start the design process is to become familiar with current styles through photos, magazines and the internet. It's always important to determine the main functions of the space and how it is going to be used not only now, but in the future.

Creating a list of wants/needs is also beneficial to allow the client to really put some thought into their space as well as providing a guideline for the designer to follow.

In your experience, what is the room that people most commonly want to redecorate/redesign?

We find that customers are often most interested in redesigning the kitchen and great room because they are the main areas of the home where family and friends gather. They serve as multi-purpose spaces that require good design in order to function, while still capturing the homeowner's style.

What are the basic elements of a complete room design?

The basic elements to follow in order to create a look of completion are implementing a focal point, having balance and symmetry, coordinating colors and developing unity through accessories, materials and textures used within a space.

How are the interior design fee and budget typically set?

Interior design fees are typically charged by the hour or per consultation. If a client wants to take on a larger project such as redesigning a room or plans to undergo a renovation, we also offer packaged prices to allow the homeowner to finance accordingly. As for the budget, it is typically set by the client and how much they want to invest into the process. We offer many money saving options through our company to make interior design affordable for everyone.

What is one of the most common regrets homeowners have when it comes to interior design choices?

One of the most common regrets we have seen when it comes to interior design choices is when the client tries to take on a project themselves without any consultation or advice from a design professional. We often have clients tell us they wish they had contacted us sooner. The best way to ensure your renovation or selections will meet your end goal is to hire a skilled eye to provide a second opinion and offer that confidence when making those final decisions.

What's the best way for people to reach you and your company?

Our company is readily available for those who are looking for design advice. The best way to reach us is through our website (www.affordableinteriorsinc.com) where people can fill out a form to request a consultation or by phone (734.649.4797) to talk with the owner, Cindy Toth directly.
