Gator's Cajun Cooking Hand Batters Fresh Meats with Cajun Flare

By Kelly Church

A staple in the Southfield, MI community for more than 10 years, Gator's Cajun Cooking originally was a small menu highlighting fish and chicken. After gaining popularity, the restaurant moved to a larger space and expanded their menu, which now consists of a wide range of Cajun delicacies.

"We have a mix of Cajun influenced items and BBQ style cuisines," Nadir Jiddou, owner of Gator's Cajun Cooking, said. "Fro [hand-battered] alligator to fresh fried fish, to smoky baby back ribs, we have a variety of menu items that will soothe the appetite of all ages and taste buds."

Menu items are mostly organized by plates with the guest choosing their meat: chicken, chicken buckets, ribs or seafood. There are also wings available by 10, 20, 30 or 50 pieces. Guests can also opt for individual items, including Angus beef burgers, available as a quarter-pound, half-pound or one-pound burger. There is also a po' boy sandwich on the menu with the guests' choice of shrimp, cod, perch or catfish in their sandwich.

"The thing that separates Gators from local competitors is our meat is fresh," Jiddou said. "We do not have pre-battered seafood products and all [of] our chicken, burgers, [and] ribs are fresh, never frozen, from our supplier. We also do a lot of on site catering where we can either have the food [prepared] in store and delivered with servers or have on-site grilling with setup and cleanup included."

For Jiddou, though, one of his favorite parts about owning and working at Gator's Cajun Cooking is mingling with his customers. The restaurant has consistently donated to organizations and schools in the community as a way of giving back to the people that keep them in business.

"The best part of the job is the interaction with the customers that come in consistently and [we] know them by name," Jiddou said. "The face of a satisfied customer after they tell me how good everything tasted is always an awesome feeling."

Gator's Cajun Cooking also offers catering. The full menu can be found online, where guests can also place orders. Visit gatorscajuncooking.com to learn more.
