From the Garden to the Gallery: How Kaiser Suidan Began His Artistic Journey

By Elisha Neubauer

Kaiser Suidan found his love of art early in life. Raised in Milford, Michigan, he began his journey into the art world through the garden...learning quickly that he loved working with natural elements and quickly found his way to clay as a medium.

Once finding his beloved method of creation, Suidan began to shine. All through junior high and high school, Suidan continued to win award after award for his phenomenal skill in his ceramic work. He was recognized by the College of Creative Studies in Detroit with a full scholarship, where he graduated with honors in 1993.

After beginning his ceramics business in a small basement studio, Suidan decided to dip his toe into the entrepreneurial aspect and add a few notches to his title belt. Over the last two decades, he has been an artist, a gallery owner, a curator, an instructor, and a mentor. Putting as much passion into these job titles as he did his clay, it was no surprise that Suidan succeeded in all of them.

Today, Suidan owns his own commercial building which currently houses his own living quarters as well as his very own studio, Next Step Studio and Gallery. The space provides adequate room for both his work station and an adjoining gallery, which is open to the public. While his own passion is in ceramics, Suidan has opened his gallery to other artists, exhibiting a wide variety of mediums from all across the art spectrum. Located in Ferndale, Michigan, the gallery opened in 2006 with a mission to provide a space for young artists to be represented in a safe and nurturing environment.

The gallery space is unique in its own right. Converted from a garage, it now depicts a beautiful yet industrial ambiance, with exposed metal ceilings and cement flooring. The harshness of the industrial aspect is contrasted perfectly by the stunning array of colorful artwork hanging on the stark white walls. In addition to the gallery, the building presents an outdoor private patio area which is available for special events.

Suidan and his artists have not restricted themselves to the gallery space only. Suidan selects his artists with care as they are often invited to attend many art conventions, competitions, and shows alongside him. These events include, but are not limited to, shows like the Coconut Grove Arts Festival in Miami, Florida and the Architectural Digest Design Show in New York City.
