5 Tips for a Stree-Free Move: An Interview with Joe Muck of Top Dog Movers

By Joe Muck

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Top Dog Movers provides packing, storage, supplies sales, labor only services and of course moving. We can literally pack an entire house on one day and then move it from current to new residence the next.

What are some of the challenges that people face when they're moving to another home?

There are a number of things from changing billing addresses and updating home services (cleaning, lawncare, etc) of the change to the physical packing and preparing for the upcoming move.

What can they do to help prevent or solve those challenges?

As soon as somebody decides they're moving, they should create a checklist of items. Detail all service providers to do a change of address form and/or cancellation of service such as internet. It is never too early to begin this checklist and we actually recommend starting a month to two months in advance if at all possible.

If you needed to move, what steps would you take to make the process stress-free?

First thing to do is get rid of the clutter. Hosting a garage sale, setting up a donation pickup/dropoff, etc. is a great way to start eliminating things from your move that you no longer use. While doing that, you can do a simple inventory of specialty or fragile items in your home that may need special care. Bring these to the attention of your mover so they are packed properly. Also, consider your food purchases. A few weeks before moving is not the time to stock up on perishable items. Finally, it's never too early to start packing. Seasonal clothes, pictures, etc. can be packed immediately. Take care of these items because you will have plenty to do the week or so leading up to your move.

Can you share one of the biggest regrets you've seen people have about their move?

Waiting. Waiting to pack until the last minute and not realizing how long it will take is common. Good moving companies a very busy. Calling to schedule a move with only a couple of days notice or even a couple weeks before a major holiday can make it difficult to accommodate.

What are some things homeowners should look for in a moving company to ensure that their move will be as easy and stress-free as possible?

If you're calling an independent company in Michigan, the State requires you to have an MPSC license. They keep close tabs on if the company has insurance or has failed any inspections and such. If those things occur, the company will not have an MPSC license which means they may not live up to your standards. Also, be as thorough as possible. Additionally, ask your mover for a checklist. This will typically cover any items the mover can not move (typically live items, hazardous materials are examples). Lastly, most local moves will be rated by the hour and many long distance moves will be rated by weight. If items that are moved were somehow skipped over, the final costs will be more than anticipated and that's never a good way to end a move.
