Efficient Windows for Efficient Homes: An Interview with Sean Kelly of Kelly Window and Door Manufacturing

By Sean Kelly

Please tell us a bit about your company and its foundation.

Kelly Window and Door Manufacturing was founded in 1981 to manufacture custom sized wood windows, and aluminum clad wood windows (maintenance free exterior/wood interior) with the aluminum clad available in any color. We manufacture windows for new homes, replacement windows for older homes, and windows that meet historic criteria for homes in historic communities.

What makes a window efficient for a home?

Windows with double pane glass that have both Low-e coating and Argon gas. The Low-e coating reflects heat and ultraviolet rays, the Argon gas provides the glass better insulation values than glass without it. Also modern weather stripping that is made of more durable materials than in older windows.

What are the factors to consider when deciding to get windows for one's home?

First do you actually need new windows? If your windows are less than fifteen years old and were maintained properly, you probably do not need new windows. If your windows are more than fifteen years old, have air or water leaks, or do not have double pane glass, chances are that new windows would help in reducing your energy cost.

What are the most popular types of windows of modern-day homes?

The most popular types of windows are the ones with maintenance free exteriors. With maintenance free exteriors home owners do not have to worry about how often they need to paint the windows. Do I paint them every year, every five years? The maintenance free exterior is worry free for thirty years or more.

Why do we need different windows for different homes?

With windows as well as with homes there are different levels. You may have a "starter" home, or your "last" home, or a home in an historic neighborhood. The type and style of your home, plus the type of use that is planned for the home (rental property, retirement, vacation, or permanent residence) would be used in determining the kind of window used.

What is your favorite advice to give homeowners who are on the process of getting new windows?

Get at least three quotes for the same style of window, compare "apples to apples". Make sure all of the quotes are for windows built with the same material. Get references from friends, relatives, or contractors doing other work in your home.
