Divine Power Yoga Gives You Insight And A Stronger Core

By S. Mathur

For Cheryl Wickham, owner and director of Divine Power Yoga in South Lyon MI, yoga is not a competition but a transition. Her advice for beginners is not be intimidated, since we all have to start somewhere.

"Throughout life, we often find that we have to start again," she said. "Classes here at Divine give you the freedom to do just that. Students show up wherever they are at and grow from there."

Yoga opens up a whole new world, once students realize what they can do with their bodies. For most people, the most significant change is that they find they have a stronger core.

"Yoga helps to strengthen all of the smaller muscles in the body which helps to support (and protect us from injury) in all of those bigger activities that we do." Wickham said. "People find quick results with core strengthening because it can help with posture, back pain and provides ease in everyday movements. Those three things, quite simply, just make people feel better which then has a positive effect in so many ways."

Wickham has over twenty years of experience with yoga and is always learning something new. She's more focused on reflection than poses, and finds that the practice helps give her insight into possibilities. Yoga has helped her navigate life and that's what she wants to share with others.

"We at Divine are here to meet you wherever you are," she said. "Together we become aware of how we can all show up better We're real people that support one another creating a positive community."

Classes at the studio can be taken in sequence as the student progresses through the practice. The Basics class is a slower paced class for beginners, who can move on through Power/Basics and Deep Stretch to Power Yoga. Power Yoga is based on the Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga tradition and has a dynamic sequence of postures for a challenging workout.

Restorative yoga classes include meditation and yoga nidra. A class that combines yoga with weekend relaxation meets at the Witch's Hat Brewery on Saturdays. Yoga stretches in the barrel room are followed by a glass of beer. It might be the most fun yoga class ever. And a portion of the proceeds from this class go to benefit the Huron Valley Humane Society. The studio also connects to community near and far, through charity projects for local schools and in Africa.

Divine Power Yoga also offers healing massage and reiki treatments. The studio can bring yoga to the workplace to reduce stress and improve productivity.
