Creating an Outdoor Water Fountain: An Interview with Kip Northrup of PondBuilder Inc.

By Kip Northrup

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

PondBuilder Inc. manufactures products for professional installers and DIY-ers to easily install and maintain a variety of ponds, waterfalls, and fountains.

What are the steps involved in building an outdoor fountain?

The steps to building an outdoor fountain are to first select the appropriate basin size based on the size fountain being installed. Basins range from 24" in diameter up to 72" in diameter. A hole is dug to fit the basin with the top of the basin being at grade level. The fountain is then installed on top of the basin. The pump is installed inside the basin and is connected via hose to the fountain. The top of the basin is covered with polished pebbles or decorative stone. The fountain fills and spills over into the basin where the pump recirculates it.

What ways can homeowners prepare for these?

Homeowners can prepare for a fountain by first determining where they'd like to locate it. We recommend placing the fountain in an area that you use most so that you can hear, see, and enjoy the fountain the most.

What is the typical price for homeowners to create their own fountain?

Typical installation cost usually varies based on how elaborate the fountain piece is itself but we have complete packages that start around $500 and can go as high as $6000. We typically see the average fountain price being in the $1200 to $1500 range.

What benefits does having an outdoor water fountain give?

The benefits of adding a fountain are numerous. First and foremost is the relaxing qualities a fountain can offer. Moving water attracts your senses as well as a variety of birds, butterflies and wildlife.

Does your company offer any other services?

Our company manufactures and sells the products necessary to be successful with your project but we do not offer any installation or servicing options. We do have an extensive authorized contractor network should someone want a professional installation or maintenance needs.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you and your company?
