Come In and Get Intensified at Warren's Shut Up and Box Gym

By Elisha Neubauer

If you're looking for more than just a gym, then Shut up and Box might be just the place for you. Claiming to be more like a family than a gym, it operates with a small-town feel?each staff member knows every guest by name and workouts are done in a team setting, instead of an individualized attempt. This teamwork, this group setting, is what truly sets Shut Up and Box apart and has become a large part of who they are as a business.

The instructors at Shut Up and Box are there for more than just direction. They provide motivation, a tool that is integral to the success of any workout plan. In addition to being motivated by the highly qualified instructors, the gym members motivate each other as well, creating a warm, safe, and encouraging atmosphere.

"We call ourselves a family because we are nothing without each other," explains Al Irish, owner of Shut Up and Box, regarding the use of class setting workouts. "We've had the extraordinary opportunity to witness bonds of friendships, relationships, and even marriages bloom from the setting of our gym."

When it comes to hiring instructors, Irish has only brought on strong, motivated, encouraging individuals with highly qualified resumes and a penchant for helping others. It's important to Irish that his team truly enjoys the work they do. But there's another side to his instructors that help makes Shut Up and Box the enjoyable environment that it is.

"We're fortunate to have a great staff who are not only elite athletes, but they also have the uncanny ability to be goofy, and to entertain our members in a way that makes everyone feel comfortable," Irish details. "I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people to be able to instill confidence and determination in someone."

While the atmosphere of Shut Up and Box is a major pull to the company, it's the flagship class, the Intensity Workout, which keeps them coming back for more. Created over twenty years ago, by Irish himself, the Intensity Workout started out as just a warm-up to another of his classes -- a fifteen-minute session of high cardio that was a predecessor to his 'bag class.' Today, it's a full blown course and one of his most popular courses.

"It's truly something that has to be experienced, not just read about," he affirms. The unique class resembles more of a nightclub than a gym workout, according to Irish, complete with strobe lights, lasers, black lights, and even a fog machine. As the session goes on, it dives into a high energy, high cardio workout lasting over one and a half hours. "When the class is over, members always report the same thing: an incredible feeling of euphoria that they've never experienced," declares Irish. "Definitely worth a try!!"
