Coco Fairfield's Eclectic Fare Delights In Berkley, Michigan

By Paul Rowe

At Coco Fairfield's classic breakfast and lunch dishes feel brand new. Browsing the menu, it seems that every tried and true recipe has added some unique twist to shake things up. From the crisp and airy Belgian waffles, served with authentic Michigan maple syrup and butter, with its specialty house-made, seasonal fruit compote, to the Sunnyknoll savory waffle with its special hollandaise sauce, Coco Fairfield's state of the art menu dazzles.

"Our menu consists of fresh breakfast and lunch classics with a twist," owner Martin Miller said. "We are fresher and a little bit of a step up from a diner or Coney Island restaurant. All of our fruit and veggies are fresh and prepped daily, and our coffee is roasted weekly and ground daily."

Keeping things fresh with both healthy and indulgent options helps Coco Fairfield's appeal to folks of all different tastes and dietary needs. Eliminating the use of deep fryers has also helped to keep the menu crisp and on the healthier side of things. Offering several vegan and vegetarian options such as the Tyler tofu scramble, featuring delectable crumbled tofu sautéed with fresh spinach, red peppers, onion, tomato, and mushrooms has opened up savory avenues for folks with dietary restrictions.

Luckily for folks seeking a healthier option, the menu at Coco Fairfield's is graced with nitrate-free roasted chicken and turkey breast, house-made soups, and freshly made waffle butter. Using local ingredients is the key to these fresh options. Marty and Nicole Miller proudly conducts business with several fine Michigan companies. Fresh maple syrups and jams come from Doodle's Sugarbush in Blanchard, Michigan, while the delicious coffee served at Coco Fairfield's comes from the exemplary Zingerman's in Ann Arbor.

"Our atmosphere is fun and eclectic," Miller said. "It's a small space with booth and counter seating. The colors are comforting and the walls are covered with a fun collection of clocks, some of them even donated from our regular customers."

Looking out on the space, guests are confronted with clever bacon-centric sayings sprinkled throughout the diner's many whimsical clocks. The customers that typically fill Coco Fairfield's range from young families to older couples. The downtown Berkley location lends itself to a varied crowd.

"We have a great staff, most of whom have been with us since we opened almost four years ago," Miller said. "We all love working together and many customers have commented on how friendly everyone is. They can tell we all get along really well."

At Coco Fairfield's, regular customers of all personalities and ages huddle around the counter, bantering with the friendly waiters and waitresses. Miller loves being part of a warm, close-knit community.
