Arthur Murray Dance Center: Tapping Toes for Almost 100 Years

By Elisha Neubauer

Arthur Murray is a name that rings resonant in both the dance and business industry. Unlike any other dance studio of its time, Murray's altered the perception of dance lessons and business practices alike, breaking ground in a way no other studio had done just yet.

Murray's love for dance was rivaled only by his mind for business and the combination created a studio that the world had never seen before. Using cutting-edge advertising practices, Murray began utilizing the now-well-known concept of direct mail to solicit dance lessons across the county way back in the early 1900s.

Having garnered attention for this virtually unheard of technique, Murray continued breaking the norms, utilizing students from Georgia Tech to help create the world's first radio broadcast of live dance music which was transmitted to a group of his students a few miles away. The thirties saw Murray's teachers as a regular part of every first-class steamship cruise and the studio introduced such dances to the public as the "Lambeth Walk" and "The Big Apple." "In fact it was 'The Big Apple' that launched Mr. Murray's one studio into the largest chain of dance schools," the website proudly states.

Today, Arthur Murray Dance Centers are worldwide, appearing in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe, the Middle East, Japan, Africa, and Australia. As the second oldest franchise organization in the US, Arthur Murray Dance Centers have been providing top notch dance education to the public for almost a hundred years. "Arthur Murray dance studios offer everything from waltz to salsa, to country to polka," explains Tansy Degen, Owner of the Northville, Michigan franchise. "Everything you watch on dancing with the stars plus more."

Degen, who formed a love of dance early on, cites her students as the main reason she teaches. "Teaching is a very fulfilling career," she says. "Being surrounded by creative and inspirational people every day, changing lives through dance." It is Degen's adoration for the practice which led her to open a franchise, instead of her own branding. "Here at Arthur Murray we know that everyone can learn to dance," Degen affirms. "There is no such thing as two left feet."

While it takes a great heaping of hard work, patience, and practice, Degen assures us that the benefits far outweigh the work put in. Dancing allows you to gain self-confidence, lose weight, get ready for an event, or just make the special person in your life happy. It is a creative outlet which brings joy to those who utilize it, and creates an environment which allows people to release stress and let loose. "Arthur Murray dance studio is the place to be," Degen boasts.
